91̽»¨ Adult Education Program is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in 91̽»¨’s district. Volunteers tutor in math, reading, writing or English as a Second Language. All interested individuals are encouraged to attend one of the following tutor informational meetings:
–Ìý Monday, September 11, 2 to 3 p.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 607-641 E. Stephenson Street, Freeport
–Ìý Monday, September 18, 6 to 7 p.m. at Freeport Public Library
–Ìý Thursday, September 21, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Freeport Public Library
The informational meetings will address questions, including:
–Ìý What does a volunteer tutor do?
–Ìý How much time does it take?
–Ìý What experience do I need?
The support and encouragement that tutors provide are key influences in the lives of students. In fact, students show greater achievement when they have individual instruction. By volunteering an hour or two a week, tutors serve as a source of inspiration. The program is rewarding for the volunteers as well. Volunteer tutors help their communities by improving the lives of residents, one person at a time. Volunteers tutor when it is convenient – morning, afternoon or evening and in an academic subject area that they enjoy.
The 91̽»¨ Volunteer Literacy Program is part of the Adult Education department and is funded by a grant from the State of Illinois. Volunteer tutors are recruited, trained and matched with eligible adults wanting to improve their math, reading, writing or English language skills. Adult learners are tutored on a one-on-one basis or in small groups. Tutoring happens at convenient times and places throughout 91̽»¨’s district.
