About Prairie Wind

The Prairie Wind is a diverse collection of poetry, artwork, photography, and music from the many members of the 91探花 community. It is produced annually by students and staff in the Humanities and Fine Arts departments at 91探花. Published since 1992, each issue is created by an editorial staff composed of students and volunteer community members who are guided by a team of faculty advisors.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions of poetry, short prose, visual art, and music are welcome from 91探花 students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

All submissions are reviewed for possible publication by an editorial board composed of HCC students and volunteer community members. The editorial board is guided by a team of faculty advisors. The views expressed in the publication do not necessarily reflect the views of 91探花 or its employees.

Submissions are accepted electronically only.

There is a limit of five pieces per issue for each submitter.

Poetry and short prose

Written submissions should be uploaded as Word documents and should be in Times New Roman 12 pt. font, single-spaced, title in italics, author’s name in bold underneath

For questions about written submissions please contact Tracy Mays.

Visual Art

Visual Art submissions should be uploaded using the following specifics.

  • Image format: JPG. JPEG, or PNG (Please do not save as PCX, BMP, or GIF.)
  • If scanning, scan in 鈥淭rue Color鈥 or 鈥淩GB Color鈥 or 鈥淢illions of Colors鈥 and capture at 300 PPI.
  • Pixel dimensions of your digital image should be at least 1500px on the longest dimension
  • If submitting photography shot with digital camera, the camera should capture at least 7 megapixels.

If the uploaded imagery is not clear, it will be rejected due to inferior quality for printing.

For questions about Visual Art submissions please contact Robert Apolloni or Alex Jansen.

Music

While all styles of music are welcome, in general the performances & composition must be an original work and not published elsewhere, have a high-quality recording, and the entire work (including the recording, music, and lyrics [if any]) must be the sole property of the applicant, or in the public domain. For written music submissions, engraved scores (via notation software) are preferred to high-quality handwritten manuscripts, but as long as the score is legible and conforms to notational norms, it should be fine. For music that is not notated, a lead-sheet style submission with chords and lyrics is fine, too. Purely electronic music should submit a midi file or preferably a MusicXML file along with the completed recording.

Music submissions are coordinated by Randy Haldeman, Music Instructor. For questions about Music submissions please contact Dr. Haldeman.

Take a deep breath. Forget yourself. End what is left. A mental mess. Take one last breath. Collect yourself. How do you feel? Isn’t this real? 23 times 2 is just- Are you happy? Are you satisfied? 23 times a care’s alive. Are you crazy? Are you traumatized? Now the blood is all over your dress. Are you hopeless? Are you taking lies? Now you have nobody left to fight. Are you selfish? Do you need advice? Again and again, listen, and throw in the towel. Forget yourself. Throw in the towel yourself.

[Music]

Now I’ve seen it all, and I feel it all. You don’t understand what’s happening. Start imagining. Now you need to crawl, relearn it all, you will understand what’s happening. It’s ravishing. Pardon me, but what’s the point in suffering? Excuse me, but what’s the point in covering? Throw in the towel. It’s not worth your time. Throw in the towel. It’s not worth your time.

I don’t wanna be the one that can’t please me, you’re the one I need, I’m falling to my knees, please.

I don’t wanna be the one that can’t please me, you’re the one I need, I’m falling to my knees.

I can’t feel my teeth.

Gnawing into deception, waiting for a blessing, when you start undressing, what’s the point of resting? I’m focused, not hoping, one day this will be broken. Something is feeding a beast that is awoken.

I don’t wanna be the one that can’t please me, you’re the one I need, I’m falling to my knees, please.

I don’t wanna be the one that can’t please me, you’re the one I need, I’m falling to my knees.

Push the knife deeper into my back. I crave the rush, where’s the heart attack? It’s slowly relieving, I’m barely breathing. Let me follow you and I promise you I’m hunted too.

I don’t wanna be the one that can’t please me, you’re the one I need, I’m falling to my knees, please.

The days are getting longer, the sun is hot. The worst is yet to come. They’re moving in, it’s gonna be bad, and boy it’s never fun. They don’t call ahead, or knock on the door, the just come flying in. Look at my truck, I’ve got to clean it up, it’s a mess from end to end.

Bug guts on the windshield, it’s getting that time of year. It goes flat on the bumper of my pickup truck and make a mess all over my mirrors. They bite, they sting, they’re everywhere. Brings me half to tears. Bug guts on the windshield tells me summertime is here.

[Music]

Driving to town with my windows down and a bee comes flying in. Swinging and a swatting with my baseball hat, I thought it was the end. Driving hard from ditch to ditch, it must’ve been a terrible sight. Like a Nascar lap on an old dirt road, hanging on for my dear life.

[Spoken] “What the heck is going on? I almost wrecked my pickup truck. Now this means war. It’s us or them.”

Well we battle on all summer long, I ain’t telling you no lies. They’re watching every little move we make with them beady little eyes. We swat, spray, and kill ’em dead but never really get too far. But every night kids have a blast catching fireflies in a jar.

Well they bite, they sting, they’re everywhere, and as you may have heard, back home where I come from the mosquitos are state birds.

Yeah we battle on all summer long, never really get to far. But every night kids have a blast catching fireflies in a jar. Aw, how cute.

[Spoken] “Well here he comes now with his jar full of fireflies. He them go in the house. Now I gotta go kill them all.”

I thought I knew the best of love, the sweet taste of divine. Then God sent her to me, and showed my I’d been blind. The curtain on my life went up so bright I couldn’t see. Love I’d never felt before was shining back at me.

She showed me beauty on beautiful, the wonder of her wonderful, the color of her music plays a brand new song for me. Her love is beauty on beautiful, the wonder of her wonderful, the gentle way it lifts me up where I want to be. I’m where I want to be.

She writes her own book of us, each page a perfect verse. I’ve surrendered so completely, my everything is hers. Cause there’s a crazy hunger, that I never ever knew. And the soft look in her eyes and her smile makes it all true.
